An activity tracker shows how much your dog moves, rests, and sleeps, so you can spot changes over time and share trends with your vet. Some are fitness-only. Others add GPS so you can find a dog that slips out.

This guide is based on manufacturer specs, published pricing and plan terms, and owner reviews. We have not used these trackers ourselves; see How We Research Products. Comparing battery life on the GPS models? See GPS Tracker Battery Life Compared. Prices checked October 2026.

What About Whistle?

Whistle trackers are no longer sold or supported. The service shut down on August 31, 2025, after Tractive acquired the brand, and former owners were offered a move to Tractive. If you see a Whistle device for sale, skip it.

How to Choose

1

Do you need GPS?

If your dog never leaves your side, a fitness-only tracker like FitBark 2 saves you a monthly fee.

2

Count the plan, not just the device.

Over two years, plan costs usually outweigh the hardware price.

3

Check battery life.

Activity-only trackers last months; GPS models need charging every few days to weeks. Our battery life comparison goes deeper.

4

Match your dog’s size.

Check the minimum weight listed for each tracker.

Privacy tip: check what location and activity data the app keeps. Our guide to location data privacy explains what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dog activity trackers need a subscription?

Not always. FitBark 2 works with no subscription. GPS trackers like Tractive, Fi, FitBark GPS, and Halo need a paid plan because they use cellular data.

Can an activity tracker find a lost dog?

Only if it has GPS. FitBark 2 tracks activity and sleep but cannot show your dog’s location.

Which tracker has the longest battery life?

Among these, FitBark 2 is listed at up to 6 months. Fi Series 3+ is listed at up to 3 months, and Tractive DOG 6 at up to 2 weeks.

Is Whistle still available?

No. Whistle shut down in August 2025, and Tractive is the company that took over its customers.

Can I share activity data with my vet?

FitBark lets you invite a vet or trainer to view data. Fi and Tractive keep long-term trends in their apps that you can show at a visit.

Can a tracker help on days my dog is home alone?

An activity tracker shows how active your dog was while you were out. It doesn’t detect or treat anxiety. If your dog struggles when left alone, talk to your vet and see our guide to pet calming aids.

The Bottom Line

If you just want to know how active your dog is, FitBark 2 is the easy, fee-free pick. If you also want GPS, Tractive DOG 6 is the best value, and Fi Series 3+ offers the richest health insights for a higher plan price.
